publication + interactive installation + fall 2014
Asked to pick an environment in our lives to respond to, I decided to go with the office I was working in at the time. After hearing countless stories from friends and peers, I had started collecting horror stories from interns both funny and sometimes shocking. I decided to create my publication in reaction to unpaid internships in a satirical light. I wrote the publication from cover to cover, based on both personal (exaggerated) experiences, and stories I heard from others.
"Internsh*t" is a set of 8mini-publications broken down into sections based on office-related topics such as coworkers, food, travel etc. The covers of the 8 publications when tiled one way spell out the title of the publication, and when laid out the other way, create a poster. The case was made out of a job folder that I silkscreened the titled onto.
The second portion of this project was an installation where I created a fake internship under the name of Roger Hickey, an activist against unpaid internships in the White House. The fake internship offered no compensation, no class credit, and no specific job information, yet I still got dozen of calls. The documentation of this installation can be viewed here: http://vimeo.com/81509044.
